A pair of Spanish Springs Cal Ripken all-star teams came up on the short end of tourney tilts in regional tournaments Tuesday. Read more below.
•In Nephi, Utah, the Spanish Springs Cal Ripken 12-year-old all-stars, who play on fields with 60 feet between bases, were saddled with a 7-2 loss by Carbon, Utah.
Spanish Springs took a quick 1-0 lead when Brandon Eggers blasted a solo homer for the local squad in the top of the first frame. Spanish Springs held the 1-0 lead until the third when Carbon knotted the game with a run of its own. The Utah team forged ahead 2-1 with another run in the fourth.
Carbon blew the game open with a two-run homer and a three-run dinger in a five-run, fifth-inning outburst.
Trailing 7-1, Spanish Springs got a run back in the sixth and final inning but it proved too little too late. Ryan Raymond doubled with two outs and scored on a Jacob Gildea single to account for the late score.
"Carbon is a good group of sluggers," Spanish Springs coach Will Raymond said. "For us to go out there and stay up through three and stay tight through five, it was a really good battle for our kids. It showed we can really fight with one of the elite hitting teams."
Spanish Springs will meet the winner of a Thursday morning game between Arizona and Guam. That game will start at 7:30 p.m. tonight. A loss will end the Spanish Springs team's summer tournament season.
"It will be the first time we've had to come back from a loss," Raymond said. "We'll see what we're made of and how well we bounce back from a loss. I think we'll come back strong."
•In Taylorsville, Utah, the Spanish Springs 11-70s suffered a heart-breaking 5-4 lo to Los Altos, Calif.
Los Altos broke a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The southern California team made them stand up for the win.
Trailing 5-3 in the sixth, Spanish Springs got a two-out double from Tyler Morrison to score Isaac Ruiz, accounting for the final score. Morrison, who represented the tying run, stole third but was left stranded there as the game ended.
Spanish Springs scratched out its first run in the first and added two more in the second.
The local all-star team continues pool play today with a 3 p.m. game against Bakersfield, Calif.
"Today was a better game than yesterday when we won, but that's baseball," Spanish Springs coach Travis Lee said. "We just have to execute better and we have to hit a little bit better. We didn't hit so well today."
