CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Education is seeking outstanding teachers to be nominated for the 2011 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The PAEMST program was established in 1983 by the White House and is sponsored by the Nationals Science Foundation. The program identifies outstanding math and science teachers, and is the most prestigious award presented annually to teachers.

According to a press release, since 1983, more than 3,000 teachers have been selected as presidential awardees. They represent an outstanding group of math and science teachers who bring national and state standards to life in their classrooms. As a group, they are creative problem solvers, innovative thinkers, gifted teachers and more interested in the academic success of their students than achieving personal recognition for themselves, the release states.

Teachers applying for the 2011 PAEMST program must be nominated. Anyone (principals, teachers, students and members of the general public) may nominate a teacher for the award. Nominations are done online at Nominations for the 2011 PAEMST program opened Oct. 1 and close April 1.

Applications for the 2011 cycle open Nov. 1 and must be completed by May 2, 2011. The state screening committee will select three state-level finalists in mathematics and three in science. All state finalists are automatically candidates for a national-level presidential award.

Applications from all state-level finalists are forwarded to the National Science Foundation for review by an expert panel during the summer of 2011. National awardees each receive a grant of $10,000, and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. for national recognition at a week-long ceremony, in the spring of 2012.

Teachers can be nominated to compete in either the science or the mathematics category.

To be eligible for the 2011 PAEMST applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Nominees must be teachers who are assigned to a secondary level (seventh through 12th grades) classroom in a public or private school in Nevada.

• Nominees must have at least five years of teaching experience in seventh through 12th grades science and/or math prior to their application.

• Nominees must be employed full-time by their school district or private school.

• Nominees must be assigned to teach science or math in seventh through 12th grades at least half time during the school year.
