Tribune/Dan McGee - Flying past the white flag, Sparks rider Willie Welch (58) is about to be caught by eventual pro winner Johnny Vallerio (9316). Both riders staged one of the closest races of the day in their second 125/250 moto.
MUSTANG - Around 200 riders turned out to compete in round three of the Silver Peak MX spring series. Unlike the last time, no one was complaining of the cold.

The pro events were very different although the ending was the same with Incline Village racer Johnny Vallerio scoring both overall victories.

At the end of the second 250/450 moto he said, "I got a bad start and had to work my way up. I just tried to push hard and when they both made a mistake I kind of went around on the inside."

When that race began, Brian Bodden of Carson City, got the hole shot with Ryan McElfish and Vallerio in hot pursuit. Just as the riders were tearing through the top part of the course. both leaders bobbled, which gave Vallerio the opening he needed and he tore away to take the win.

The second 125/250 moto was a very different affair. This time Willie Welch, who is an intermediate rider from Sparks, got the hole shot and led the field up the step up and onto the top part of the course.

Vallerio was at least three seconds behind the leader as he tried to nurse his ailing bike along. The chase was on as the two leaders checked out on the rest of the field.

With three laps to go, Vallerio began to close the gap, which was up to three seconds at one point. He and Welsh were almost side-by-side as they took the white flag.

On that final lap, Vallerio was able to make the winning pass and secured his sweep of the day.

"My clutch is out and it's slipping very bad," Vallerio said. "I kind of figured at the end he might get a little tired and right when he got tired, I made the move to get around him."

Donny Roberts also scored a double when he won both the 25+ and 30+ titles.

Several other riders also racked up double victories. They were Connor Jardine (65 beginner and 50 Jr., 7+), Aaron Whalin (Schoolboy and 125/250 Jr.), Jesse Gore (85 intermediate and Supermini) and Gavin Clouser (65 intermediate and 65 Open).

At the bottom of the age scale, Sparks riders Breydon Stout won the 50cc, 4-6 overall while Benjamin Niles took the 7+ division. In the veteran ranks, Sparks riders Chris Duran and Max Brokaw won the 38+ beginner and intermediate overall wins while Anthony Pulera, from South Lake Tahoe, Calif., was the intermediate winner.

If there were an "Iron Woman" award, Tia Chandler would have won it. The Damonte High School Senior crashed during the second 85cc Beginner moto and hurt a wrist as well as received some nasty looking scrapes.

Despite the pain, she took her place at the starting gate for the second Quad Open moto and rode the entire event.

During the day there were many crashes that kept the medics busy. While most resulted in minor injuries, two riders were going to be self-transported and one got an ambulance ride to the hospital.
