The Spanish Springs boys basketball team got a win in their opener of the MaxPreps Classic at Torrey Pines in suburban San Diego Saturday night.

The Cougars saw four players score in double digits en route to a 76-64 win over Cienega High of Vail, Arizona. Brian Wilson scored 19 points to lead Spanish Springs. Thomas Perkins and Brandon DeLong both posted 14 points and Kyle Raymond chipped in 11 as the foursome accounted for 76 percent of the SSHS offense.

Spanish Springs jumped out to a 24-9 lead early in the second quarter, but watched its edge get whittled down to 35-34 by halftime. The Cougars responded after the intermission and never trailed in the final two quarters. Spanish Springs outscored Cienega 43-31 after the break to secure the tournament triumph.

Spanish Springs (6-5) moves into the winners’ bracket of the Senators Division (third of five) to play Chaparral (10-0) of Temecula, Calif. Monday at 8:30 p.m.

“Offensively, that’s kind of what we need going into league play,” Cougars coach Kyle Penney said. “We’ve got to get more points. We’ve got to get more than 50 points per game if we are to have chance to be successful … We did a lot of things well. We shot a really good percentage, over 50 from the field and the 3-point line.”
