Jessica Garcia, education reporter for the Daily Sparks Tribune, has received the Nevada Association of School Board’s media award for outstanding education reporting.

Heath Morrison, Washoe County School District superintendent, called the selection of Garcia “well-deserved.” Morrison said Garcia is “an excellent reporter who really does her homework, treats everyone with respect and always goes the extra mile to be fair and accurate in her reporting.”

Garcia regularly attends and reports on meetings of the district’s Board of Trustees. She attends most town hall meetings and participates in other board activities.

“Jessica approaches every story and every subject with an open mind and a willingness to learn and get all the facts,” said board president Barbara Clark.  “She understands the challenges that our schools face. She is focused on understanding issues and reporting all sides of a story fairly.”

Garcia also played a key role in ensuring community participation as WCSD searched for a new superintendent. She regularly attended every meeting, candidate interview and town hall forum. The resulting coverage helped encourage and inform the community to take part in the selection process.

Garcia also was recognized at Tuesday’s board meeting.
