At about 11 a.m. on Thursday, 19-year-old Gerardo Espinosa walked into Renown Regional Medical Center with his 2-month-old child, who had significant head injuries and was not breathing. Espinosa told medical staff, family members, and eventually Sheriff's detectives that the child had fallen from a bed.

However, Sheriff’s detectives say they later learned through the on-going investigation that the infant's injuries were the result of child abuse. Espinosa was caring for the child at the time of the injuries, detectives said, adding that the incident occurred at Espinosa’s residence.

Espinosa was arrested for child abuse with substantial bodily harm and domestic battery and is currently being held at the Washoe County Jail on $100,000 cash-only bail.

The child remains at Renown in critical condition.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division at 328-3320 or Secret Witness, 322-4900
