A car crash early Saturday morning knocked over a power pole, caused wide power outage and killed the car’s driver.

At 2:36 a.m., Sparks Police responded to the incident in the area of Vista Boulevard and Alpland Lane. Police discovered that a white 2003 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck driven by a 24-year-old California resident with family in the area had crashed into a power pole causing the transformer to explode. The vehicle was traveling north on Vista approaching Alpland when, for unknown reasons, it drifted off the roadway onto a greenbelt on the east side of the roadway. The vehicle then spun, re-entered the road, struck a power pole and rolled over. The single male occupant was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries.

Police said the cause of the accident is under investigation.

The transformer explosion knocked out power in an approximate three-mile radius from the areas south to Interstate 80 and Vista, west to Goldy Way and Baring Boulevard, north to Vista and Los Altos Parkway and east to the areas of Los Altos and Belmar. Vista Boulevard at Baring and South Los Altos were expected to be closed until approximately 9 a.m. so NV Energy could repair the pole. Power was restored to most areas within a half hour of the accident.
