The Spanish Springs girls soccer team was coming off a big 3-0 win at Reno, and expected to put a pounding on a struggling Hug team Tuesday night.

The Cougars were certainly on pace for a blowout over the last-place Hawks when Laura Voss scored an unassisted goal three minutes into the game.

However, Spanish Springs fans got to watch some of the most uneventful Cougars soccer in recent history for most of the remainder of the High Desert League clash. Two late goals handed the hosts a 3-0 victory.

“We seem to do that (play down to opponents) at times. I thought we were over that,” SSHS girls soccer coach Mike Faker said. “It wasn’t even down though. We just didn’t play our game. We didn’t pass the ball. It turned into sort of a free-for-all out there.”

For the next 70 minutes, neither team could find the back of the net. Although the ball spent most of the second half on the Cougars’ offensive side of the field, Spanish Springs did not change the score until it was awarded a penalty kick.

Shaylor Francom took the PK and went top shelf, putting the Purple and Teal up 2-0 with about eight minutes to go.

The second marker seemed to ignite Spanish Springs’ intensity — finally. Two minutes later, Voss scored her second unassisted goal of the game when she drew Hug goalkeeper Kortney Corley out of goal and shot the ball into an empty net.

Corley was kept busy, recording 13 saves, but she was rarely challenged by an attack.

“We didn’t play very well. There’s was no intensity,” Faker said. “The whole first half, there was nothing. I’m not really sure what happened there.”

Spanish Springs (3-0-1, 2-0 HDL) will get back to work at practice this week in order to prepare for Saturday’s home game with North Valleys at 11 a.m.

“I think we just have to put something like this behind us and just get ready for North Valleys,” Faker said. “We’ll work hard this week to make sure we’re prepared for that.”
