The Sparks Railroaders proved themselves again on Friday winning 8-0 over the Spring Creek Spartans in boys prep soccer.

"I think really from the get-go, Sparks was more aggressive than us," Spring Creek coach Ray Smith said. "They came to play and we really stood and watched."

Sparks scored four in each half for another commanding non-league win, improving to 2-0 in early action.

Sparks scored its first goal in the eighth minute by Andrew Garcia with an assist by Kevin Partida. Partida got a score of his own five minutes later, assisted by Avi Quintino.

At the 18-minute mark, Quintino had an unassisted goal of his own, putting the Railroaders ahead 3-0.

Edgar Casillas got the final score for Sparks in the half, with an assist by Vicente Cervantes.

The Railroaders did not let up in the second half, doubling their score to secure a big win over the visiting Spartans. Quintino scored six minutes into the half for his second of the day, assisted by Christian Cordova.

Sparks was awarded a penalty kick in the 67th minute and Cervantes delivered, forging the score ahead to 6-0.

Anthony Flores tallied one for Sparks in the 71st minute. He was assisted by Eric Ojeda. Sparks cut out to the left, creating space on the offensive side of the field and Ojeda dished it to Flores who had room in the middle for the 7-0 score.

Quintino got his second hat trick in as many games with a goal in the 76th minute. Off a poor Spring Creek clear, the Railroaders were able to settle and build up from the midfield, giving Quintino a shot for the final goal of the game.

Not only was Sparks' offense impressive with eight goals on 28 shots fired, but the defense was stellar too. Sparks has forced its two opponents this season into shutouts, and only allowed the Spartans three shots on goal Friday.

Sparks cut down on some of its problems as well. On Tuesday against Fernley, Sparks was whistled for six offside calls. The Railroaders cut that problem to just one against the Spartans.

"I'm really impressed with their team this year," Smith said. "This is my fourth year coaching and this is the best Sparks team I've seen. They did a really good job of getting their timing down on their runs and possessing the ball.

"I think they've got a really good team that could challenge Tahoe and Truckee this year."

Sparks plays at 10 a.m. today, hosting Battle Mountain.

Sparks fell 3-2 against Spring Creek in what Sparks coach Jerry Miller called the Railroaders' closest game with the Spartans.

Spring Creek took a 2-0 lead heading into halftime, forcing Sparks to battle back.

Sparks got a goal within a minute of the second half starting from Dannae Soto, assisted by Jessica Mendoza.

"We knew we were playing pretty even with them," Miller said. "We were giving up to them in the middle, we kind of adjusted, pushed them outside more, told midfield to get more through balls to the forwards."

Sparks scored again, in the 59th minute from Zaira Lara, with an assist from Jackie Mendoza.

Miller said Sparks has never won against Spring Creek and did not believe they had ever scored against the Spartans either. Sparks started four freshmen and three sophomores Friday.

Sparks goalkeeper Nora Valenzuela had seven saves on the day.

"We had a lot of question marks due to losing a lot of players," Miller said. "We are better than we think. The freshmen keep stepping up and doing well....We're young. They're growing. They're learning."
