So now we’re down to the final quarter dash to the finish. Most of two years of continuous campaigning for the American presidency. Eight months of bitter primary contests reminiscent of the NBA playoffs and the last 12 weeks of bitter invective and banal debates enlivened only by the arrival of a backwoods bimbo with populist appeal among the delusional demographics of the rural Bible belt. Entertaining and instructive for those interested in the degeneration of politics as an art form, but hardly the harsh dose of reality due our nation.

In the film “W.,” George is shown telling his mother that God has told him to run for president, a declaration that leaves Barbara dumbfounded. It now seems possible, after two terms of his rule, that it really was divine intervention (along with some selective vote fraud and shameful tactics) that has brought low America’s latter-day empire. Biblical history is replete with examples of the deity’s impatience with hubris-ridden rulers and their petty plans for conquest.

And one must remember that God takes what might be called the long view of the big picture, in which success for the United States may not be in the best interests of the rest of his children around the globe. Indeed, most of the rest of the world has now achieved sufficient education to understand what is happening to them and who is doing what, with which and to whom. America, and the corporate oligarchy of Western capitalism, are being challenged by alternate social systems with some success and, according to the sermons of his only son, God may just support the plans to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.

Whatever the holy intent may be, there is no question that the current effort at democratic self-rule has left us all with a clear choice for our future and possible salvation. The selection of John McCain to carry the torch for the neo-fascist cause as presently performed by the Cheney/Bush regime has revealed the ignorance and greed that are the lifeblood of modern Republican politics. The success of the Obama campaign has forced the political scorpions out from under their rocks and demonstrated for even the slowest observer the depths of their commitment to slander and lies as a mainstay of their rhetoric. Not only does the accusation that the Democrats are socialists or communist terrorists lack any substance, it speaks eloquently to the McCarthyite thinking of the party faithful, for whom the Cold War is still their defining world view.

If there is a possible salvation for our self-proclaimed bastion of liberty, it would be the election of a highly educated, politically brilliant young candidate who still retains both the idealism of youth and the broader world concern that we are all in this together and national hubris is no longer acceptable to God or mankind.

As they say east of Istanbul, “Imshallah!”

If God wills it!
