Reed dominated Game 1 of its High Desert League matchup with McQueen, but that was the last time the Raiders looked great Tuesday night at home.

Momentum quickly shifted to the bench of the northwest Reno school as the Lancers improved to 6-2 in league with a 17-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20 victory.

“I thought we really played well the first game. Unfortunately after that we kind of shut down,” Reed volleyball coach Kristen Flagtvedt said. “We started not passing the ball on serve/receive. Defensively we didn’t do our job on getting into the right position on their hitters. We didn’t make the adjustments.”

The Raiders made McQueen’s servers look good. Sam Sbriglia had seven of McQueen’s 11 aces on the night. However, about half those aces came on solid serves and the rest were due to Reed simply not handling serves.

The Lancers took their first lead of the match in the second game at 10-9 and would put together runs of 6-0 and 5-1 to pull ahead 21-12. McQueen had three aces in the rally.

Both teams played sideout volleyball the rest of the way as the Lancers tied up the match at 1-1.

Game 3 was much of the same.

Reed tried to stay close with a 4-0 run, cutting the deficit to 11-8, but McQueen answered right back with four unanswered points of its own.

The Lancers built a game-high 21-10 cushion on a 6-1 spurt, capped by a Lindsey Ball ace.

The Blue and Gold could not get closer than the final seven-point margin in the third game.

Reed senior Chelsea Cohen smacked down one of her seven kills to tie the fourth game at 4-4 — the first tie since it was 2-2 in Game 3.

A Cohen ace kept the Raiders in the game, trailing 11-10, but then the wheels fell off again.

McQueen went on an 8-1 run to take control of the game.

However, even with several reserves in the game, Reed was able to close the gap and make it somewhat interesting.

“I thought a couple of them stepped in and did their job,” Flagtvedt said. “At that point I was trying to find some team to start getting the job done and get the intensity back that we definitely lost after that second game.”

The Raiders were able to get within five points at 21-16, 23-18 and 24-19 before Cohen’s fourth and final ace made it 24-20. But the home team could not keep the momentum going and hit the antenna, giving the HDL’s second-place team the win.

Reed looked poised to pull off the upset after building an 18-10 lead in the opening game. The Lancers put together a string of five straight points only to watch the Raiders close out Game 1 by scoring seven of the last nine points.

Haley Gadsby led all players with 14 kills and fellow Lancer Channing Fleischmann added 10. Kathryn Authier handed out 35 assists in the winning cause.

For Reed, Jackie Lee and Kendra Davis both had 9 kills while Katrina Spencer contributed 8 kills. Senior setter Rachael Vaughn finished with 31 assists.

The Raiders (15-20, 4-4 HDL) look to get back over the .500 mark in league play when they head to Hug Thursday.

Spanish Springs def. Hug

Danielle Beebe gave away 15 assists and put down 6 kills to lead Spanish Springs to a 25-20, 25-14, 25-12 High Desert League road win in prep volleyball action Tuesday night.

Spanish Springs improved to 21-11 overall and 5-3 in HDL tilts.

Lindsay Parton lifted 8 digs for the visiting Cougars. Nicole Snyder and Emily Meister both put down 3 blocks for the SSHS spikers and Callie Aberle chipped in 4 kills.

“We were pretty lethargic,” Spanish Springs rookie coach Frank Sandomenico said. “We didn’t play up. We kind of played down. Things were not clicking, but our passing was actually really good and that’s good because we’ve been working that.”

Spanish Springs returns to the court Friday when it goes to eastern Nevada for its annual conference clash at Elko. The match is slated to start at 6 p.m.
