Scheels serves up some exotic slices

The smell of coffee, homemade fudge and fresh sliced deli sandwiches fills the air of the new Scheels All Sports Store. But unlike your typical café restaurant, there’s also a little wild boar mixed in, too.

Gramma Ginna’s Deli and Fudge Shop caters to the wild hunter at heart, offering a variety of exotic meat sandwiches with roasted elk, bison meatballs, wild boar and buffalo pastrami.

Such a diverse selection of meat, which is shipped in from a regional vendor, comes pre-cooked and all sandwiches are made in store, in front of the customers, which project leader Colleen Unterbrink said has been a success thus far.

“Overwhelming positive response,” Unterbrink said, explaining there’s something to cover every meal of the day. “We have a lot of people trying out the exotic meats.”

The Sparks store is the only Scheels, besides the one in Fargo, N.D., to offer the exotic meats, Unterbrink said, making the current world’s largest sports store even more unique.

“Customers seem to love it,” Unterbrink said.

Meat is ordered and shipped in as needed, she said, and the opening week rush has been keeping everyone busy.

The most popular sandwich has been the Philly Elk and is the healthiest and leanest cut of meat on the menu, Unterbrink said.

Close favorites include the Bison Meatball sandwich, which Unterbrink said is “delicious.”

For customers who don’t prefer meat, there are vegetarian sandwiches, salads, a full children’s menu and daily soups.

Nearby, the fudge section of the deli includes 40 different kinds of fudge, including the Truckee River Sludge and the Wolf Paw, which are homemade by an in-store Fudge Master, Unterbrink said.

Gelato, shipped in from San Francisco, is also in the deli in addition to fresh brewed Starbucks brand coffee and roasted Bavarian Almond treats.

“Everything is prepared on site,” Unterbrink said, explaining that Scheels strives to provide some of the freshest food around.

Gramma Ginna’s is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

And prepare to wait for it! While the girls behind the counter, when I went, were all very friendly, it looked as though they had no idea how to make a sandwich. I understand it was the first week...but at 11am on a Wednesday morning they should not have been already out of buffalo pastrami, or anything for that matter. I had the Philly Elk, and yeah it was good! Your only choice of side is what kinda chips you want. Cabelas has fries and onion rings at least. My friend ordered right beside me and we both got small sodas, but my cashier was giving everyone kid sized sodas instead of small. Not that it matter too much with free refills. Give it some time and they will get their act together....I'll be back to try again in a few weeks.
