Gary Jibilian’s fingers tickle across the strings of his NS Stick as his eyes close and he starts to sway to rhythms that are both forceful and melodic.

The artist, and his recently added drummer, Jay Setar, will be filling the Cantina los Tres Hombres with their raw instrumental sounds tonight, starting at 8 p.m.

Jibilian is pushing the “zig” genre, a new frontier in music that mixes intense musical theory with hypnotizing rhythms.

Jibilian’s personal art falls somewhere in between the quick staccatos of a Spanish guitar and the steady rhythms of a bass player.

One hand taps out a bass line beat on Jibilian’s non-traditional instrument, while the other slides out melodies that seem to smack of the Armenian’s ethnic past.

“I was born in Detroit but grew up with Greek, Armeinian and Italian music everywhere,” Jibilian said. “There was always some type of ethnic music somewhere, but I didn’t notice the ethnic riffs until someone said something. ... I guess it is buried in your subconscious.”

Although the long-haired artist said that his love affair with music has been life long, Jibilian’s classical training has its foundation in playing bass. He had played the bass for 12 years before picking up the NC Stick, an eight-stringed mixture of a tapping instrument, a conventional bass and a guitar.

“It appeals to a wide variety of audiences,” Jibilian said. “It is a unique thing, my music. Some parts are minimalistic while some parts are not.”
