Faith Bennett, an Alice Taylor Elementary School student, won first place in the kindergarten through third grade category for reminding people about the importance of responsible water use with her work, “Don’t Let Water Go Down the Drain.” Brandon Pearson of Maxwell Elementary won second place in the kindergarten through third grade category.
In the fourth through sixth grade category, Alina Rae Lindquist from Van Gorder Elementary placed third for her poster, “Don’t let the faucet drip!” Luana Castillo, a student at Double Diamond Elementary School, was the first-place winner in that category. Luana’s illustration encourages responsible water users to check their monthly bill for signs of a leak.
Noe Chaidez from Dilworth Middle School took third in the seventh through eighth grade category for his poster showing the Earth being rinsed by a young boy. Nathan Nolan, from Damonte Ranch Middle School, took first place in the seventh through eighth grade category. Nathan’s winning poster illustrates a “Saving Water for Dummies” book cover with water-saving tips.
First-place winners in each category received a $100 savings bond. Second-place winners received a $50 savings bond and third-place winners received a $25 savings bond and their schools will receive matching funds. All winners received a Wild Island Mega Season Pass courtesy of Wild Island Family Adventure Park. Winning artwork may be used in TMWA advertisements throughout the summer and will be displayed at various public locations in the Reno/Sparks area. First-place artwork will also be featured in Family Pulse Magazine.
Judges for the contest included: Jackie Shelton, publisher of Family Pulse Magazine; Andy Gebhardt, TMWA supervisor of customer service and conservation; Milan Sperka of Mesh Creative; Valerie Martino, publications specialist for the Washoe County School District (WCSD) and Terry Bartek, communications & community outreach administrative assistant for WCSD.
