“We’re not just a supplement company,” said Brenda Do, ‘chief trumpeteer’ at Live Gracefully. “We help people feel better. People get older. Their bodies change and everyone assumes that’s just how it is. We think its a lie — don’t fall for that. Be alive while you’re alive. We want people to improve their health and maintain it as they age.”
As part of their Share a Smile program, Do encourages her customers to post and share the company’s Hal stickers.
“Smiles are contiguous. There is nothing better than them,” said Do. “When you see Hal, he makes you smile.”He reminds you that others could use a smile too. When someone hands Hal to you out of the blue, it’s like getting a hug. It’s one human telling another, ‘Hey, I see you. I appreciate you.’ That’s just beautiful to me. You don’t need to wait until Valentine’s Day to tell someone that you love them.”
Live Gracefully customers, and those who write in, are given stickers and are asked to put a sticker in a place where you can see it everyday — “to remind yourself to be happy,” said Do — and to also give a Hal sticker away to a friend or a stranger.
“We call it our ‘love litter,’” said Do. “We truly believe love and happiness can solve everything from war to cancer. So Hal’s out there spreading more love in the world. To me, love is the best medicine of all and the quickest way to living gracefully. People all over the country are putting him in tip jars, handing them to co-workers, sticking them on water bottles, and so on.”
Do came up with Hal one day after doodling logos.
“One day, I was drawing smiley faces and I drew Hal,” said Do. “I just thought he was so cute and infectious. I thought he made a good symbol to help spread the love around.”
“When I hand a Hal sticker to someone, I’m not just sharing a smile. I’m giving that person acknowledgement and reminding them someone cares,” said Do. “We often move through our days so busy. We treat people as labels rather than humans. For instance, the guy at the store is just thought of as the cashier. The woman behind the desk is known as the banker. But we’re all so much more than that.”
Do’s customers post photos of “Hal” on Live Gracefully’s Facebook page.
“I’ve handed out over 3000 Hals,” said Do. “It’s fun to see the Hal sightings and spot them all over town. One time, I was in a radio station, and one of the hosts had Hal on the back of her cell phone. A few times, I’ve walked through parking lots and saw Hal on the back of cars. These random Hal sightings are pretty cool.” “
Live Gracefully also contributes to area non-profits.
“We give non-profits a special code they give out,” said Do. “When a customer enters in that code at checkout, that non-profit receives $5 per order.”

“Let’s just blanket the world in Hals,” said Do. “Do what it takes to be happy and share your smile.”
