Less than 21 hours after its big opening-night win over Douglas, the Reed boys basketball team rolled Wooster, 61-29, on the road Wednesday night in its first game in the Rail City Classic.

“They (Wooster) play hard. They played us hard. They made some shots early but our kids fought,” Reed coach Dustin Hall said. “But anytime you can win a game, you’re happy and the kids did some good things. All eight guys that suited up, contributed. All eight scored so that was a definite positive.”

The Raiders jumped out to a 20-6 lead after the first quarter and led 36-16 at the half.

Jack Kuchler led Reed with 17 points and seven boards while Devin Herbert (nine points, 10 rebounds) was a point from a double-double.

Two of Herbert’s points came on a one-handed baseline flush over a Wooster defender.

Reed (2-0) entered the game coming off a win over last year’s Sierra League champ (Douglas) the night before and Hall said he addressed the team before what could be described as a trap game.

“We talked about it. We were on such a high then you have to turn around and play a game 18 hours later. We were out of our normal routine so I could tell we were a little too comfortable but we had a good talk before the game and the kids responded well,” Hall said. “They came out and fought hard again. There wasn’t really any hangover from the previous night.”

The Raiders will look to improve to 3-0 Thursday against Placer at Wooster in their second game of the Rail City Classic. Tipoff is at 4:30 p.m.

Despite Reed’s hot start, Hall said there is plenty for his squad to improve on. The Raiders wasted no time in hitting the film room after Wednesday’s romp.

“We are doing some good things but there is still a lot to be desired. We watched film tonight after the game and we’re still a long ways away,” Hall said. “The good news is we are winning games but there is a lot we still have to build on and improve on.”
