Sometimes Ibuprofen is the solution. Sometimes (for the hard-core crowd) a shot of vodka (or two), is the remedy for aches and pains.

Johanna Grantham, the general operations manager at ‘Massage Envy’ at the Sparks Galleria, says both are ridiculous.

“I think it’s hard for people to grasp the more holistic approach,” Grantham said. “I think we are a pill-popping nation … Let’s get to the core of the issue and stop taking pills.”

Massage Envy has called the Sparks Galleria home since Jan. 2008 and serves more than 1,100 members. The location is one of more than 750 nationwide.

Despite being a part of a booming national chain, Grantham proudly said Message Envy maintains a small-business feeling.

“It’s a big facility but it’s very much warm and fuzzy,” Grantham said. “I think people really do appreciate that. It’s not cold and it’s not like we are turning and burning people out of here.”

Prospective and current clients alike are given individual, personalized treatment each time in. Therapeutic services offered range from a number of different massages, to facials and hot stone treatment.

New clients are asked to fill out a questionnaire before speaking to therapists to give an idea of trouble spots or particular parts of the body constantly strained.

Grantham said Massage Envy’s friendliness, and unique treatment for each client, separates it from competing massage and spa businesses. Featuring a welcoming environment, the Sparks spa is growing, particularly in the last six months.

Grantham said business “plateaued” during the economic downturn but is expanding because people are warming up to the idea of holistic health solutions.

“People started coming in and seeing us more often. We didn’t really get hit that hard,” Grantham said. “I do attribute it to people starting to say ‘wow, look, I can do this and it will help me.’”

The business’s general operations manager, who fills the same role at a separate location in South Reno on Virginia Street, doesn’t just preach her product. She buys it, too.

Grantham hops onto the massage table when dealing with stress or aches of her own.

Membership at Massage Envy costs $59 a month or “a cup of coffee a day” as Grantham evaluated it. Members get one hour-long massage a month as well as member pricing on Massage Envy’s numerous other products. Non-members pay $78 for the same hour-long massage.

Members also have access to any of more than the 750 nation-wide locations.

Grantham said witnessing the health transformation of clients is the biggest advantage working in the spa business. Working in the massage business six years, she recalled numerous accounts where clients avoided the knife due to massage treatment.

With the holiday season approaching, and the holiday-shopping season closing even faster, Grantham did not make a declarative statement explaining why a Message Envy massage, or membership, would make a good gift. Rather, she explained it with a question.

Grantham asked: “What’s better than the gift of relaxation?”

Message Envy is open seven days a week and can be found online at www.massageenvy.com.
