Students across the Washoe County School District Monday flocked back to classrooms for the start of a new school year.

However, in a trend different from recent years past, high school athletes have not gotten back to work just yet. The WCSD’s 2013-14 school calendar starts two weeks earlier than normal but the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s (NIAA) master calendar did not make the same change.

With the exception of football players, the rest of the County’s prep athletes will be in class for a week before they start official practice.

"I think everybody is so excited to start their seasons," Reed girls soccer coach Jason Saville said. "Now we've got a whole of week school before we can do that. There's just a little bit of lil anxiety. I'm sure all the fall coaches in Washoe County are dealing with it

"There's nothing to complain about. Everybody is on the same page. We all just want to get going. It's kind of like waiting for Christmas."

Football teams throughout the Silver State could have started a four-day no-contact conditioning period last Saturday. All three Sparks schools started Monday. On Thursday, team members can begin wearing helmets during practices and on Monday (8/19), prep football players can don pads for full-contact workouts. Opening Night for high school football in Nevada is Aug. 30.

Reed will host Foothill of Redding, Spanish Springs will play at Bishop Manogue and Sparks goes to Yerington in Week 1.

The NIAA calendar allows all other fall sports teams — volleyball, soccer, tennis, cross country and girls golf — to start practice on Saturday.

"Before we went to this balanced schedule, I was at a year-round school," Reed volleyball coach Kristen Flagtvedt said. "I was always (teaching) in school when the volleyball season started. So this feels the same to me, but it probably does feel much different for my players."

The first possible date to start games for those sports is Aug. 30.
