The Spanish Springs Citizen Advisory Board tonight will hear a presentation by Jeanne Ruefer, planning manager for the Washoe County Department of Water Resources, about the a letter that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued for the Spanish Springs flood detention basin.

Tonight’s regular monthly CAB meeting will start at 7 p.m. in the community center at Lazy 5 Regional Park.

The letter of flood basin map revision would affect flood insurance requirements for residents whose property would now be removed from the floodplain. After the presentation to the CAB, Reufer will answer questions from the board and residents.

In addition to the flood map revision presentation, the CAB will review, for a second time, the Spanish Springs Associates’ request to amend the area plan to increase the percentage of commercial land to industrial land from 7.25 percent to 9.1 percent near the Spanish Springs Business Park. This second part of this item is requesting to change more than 100 acres near Boneyard flat from open space to industrial.

At the March 11 board meeting, the board was unsure about Spanish Springs Associates’ amendment requests and asked attorney Bob Sader, who presented maps, charts and plan on how the company would use the land, tough questions about the project. This eventually lead to a heated discussion about area land use.

The board will not be voting on this item tonight, but will be making recommendations for changes to the project.

Tonight’s meeting will also include monthly reports from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department, the community liaison from Washoe County, as well as Citizens Advisory Committee updates, parks updates and an update on area search and rescue.

The community center at Lazy 5 Regional Park is at 7100 Pyramid Highway. The CAB meeting starts at 7 p.m.
