The prep softball season was barely two days old and the Spanish Springs Cougars had already improved their record to 3-0 thanks to a tournament triumph Friday.
Spanish Springs beat Oakmont of Roseville, 7-0 in a mercy-rule shortened four-inning affair at the season-opening Hiram Johnson Tournament in Sacramento.
The Cougars, who had already collected two tourney wins Thursday night, earned a berth in tonight’s semifinals with Friday’s victory. The SSHS nine starts semifinal action at 5 p.m. and could move into the championship clash at 8 p.m. with a win.
Oakmont was no match for Spanish Springs, the defending 4A Nevada state champion. The Cougars cruised, posting four runs in the bottom of the first frame and three more in the second to account for its offense.
In the first inning, Ashley Decker walked and scored on a triple by Danielle Ming, who raced home shortly after on a passed ball. Amanda Collier followed for the Cougars and blasted a solo homer. Spanish Springs tacked on its final run of the inning when Jen Martensen tripled and scored on a Karlyn Jones sacrifice bunt.
The Cougars added their three runs in the second thanks to a solo homer by Decker and two-run dinger by Jaci Carlsen.
Junior right-hander Ashley Collier picked the win in the circle for Spanish Springs. She allowed just one hit, striking out 10 without issuing a walk. Oakmont got just one baserunner to second base. That came after Collier hit a batter and a passed ball followed.
The win was the first for Collier in her first varsity pitching appearance. She was an all-league outfielder last spring for the Cougars.
