The Reed High softball team kicked off its season with a rare tie Thursday at the Victory Preseason Tournament in Sacramento. A day later and it looks as if the tie wasn't all that rare. Reed settled for another tie Friday, playing to a 1-1 draw against Roseville in its first game of the day. Reed came back in its second tournament affair Friday to dump El Camino 6-1.

Due to time and field constraints, tournament rules allow for ties in pool play.

Roseville looked like it might steal a one-run win. The Tigers grabbed the early lead with a solo homer in the first inning. The suburban Sacramento school made the slim lead stand up until Reed managed its only run of the contest with a score in the top of the fifth frame.

Britni Greininger walked for the Raiders. Her pinch runner, Chelsea Cummings, scored after a double by Lindsay Yearman and a passed ball.

Jackie Sertic worked all six innings of the shortened tournament game. She struck out two without issuing a walk and limiting Roseville to five hits.

Reed's second game Friday was a different story. El Camino did post a first-inning run against Reed, like Roseville, and the Eagles did not score again, like Roseville. But Reed had much more offense. The Raiders scored in four of their five offensive frames, gradually pulling away for the five-run win.

Reed knotted the game at a run apiece when it scored in the bottom of the first. Cassy Walsh singled and scored.

In the RHS third, Yearman was hit by a pitch and came around to score following a Tyler Sumpter single and an Eagle errant relay throw.

The Raiders' fourth saw Cummings get down a bunt single and race around the bases after a stolen base and a Laura Frost single.

In the fifth, Reed proceeded to put up a three spot. Leighton Lee walked, Denaya Thompson singled and Mary Dettling singled, saturating the sacks with Raiders. Amanda Leighton and Cummings drew free passes to force in two runs and Frost collected an RBI groundout, accounting for the third run.

Megan Dettling worked all six innings in the circle for Reed. She struck out seven and did not give up a walk to an El Camino hitter, while allowing only two Eagles hits.

Reed will play Casa Roble of Orangevale, Calif. Saturday at 3:15 p.m. and a second opponent, yet to be identified, immediately following at 5 p.m.

Spanish Springs is also playing in the three-day tournament in Sacramento. After winning its first two games in pool play Thursday, the SSHS gang was hung with a 4-2 defeat by Del Oro of Loomis, Calif.

The Cougars gave up three costly unearned runs in the loss but further details were unavailable by press time.
