Galena had four runners finish in the Top 10 of the boys race and finished with 25 team points, 20 points lower than second-place Douglas' 45 points. The McQueen girls put three runners in the Top 10 and just edged out second-place Galena, which finished with 38.
Reno's Jordan Cardenas was the top boys finisher, posting a time of 16:56. That was five seconds faster than second-place Kai Benedict of McQueen.
The top two teams qualify for next week's state cross country meet as well as the top five individuals from non-qualifying teams. Cardenas, Benedict. Cody Forman (17:22, sixth) of Reed, Ron Salvanera (17:26, seventh) of McQueen and Brandon Robbins (17:33, ninth) also of Reed made up that group.
Ben Stevens (18:57, 38th), Chris Kareck (19:22, 48th) and Chris Cummings (19:42, 55th) also competed for Reed.
Travis Heitzenrader (18:08, 22nd) and Grant Dieter (18:09, 23rd) were the top two finishers for Spanish Springs. Also competing for Spanish Springs were Troy Peterson (18:33, 29th), Beau Retzer (19:01, 42nd), Tyler Clemens (19:02, 44th) and Jared Means (19:30, 51st).
Reed (156) finished sixth and Spanish Springs (160) eighth in boys team totals.
On the girls side, Galena's Sara Hanneman bested the field, cruising to a time of 20:25. That was four seconds faster than second-place Michelle Cooper of McQueen (20:29).
In addition to McQueen's and Galena's girls squads, the top five female finishers not from those two schools will also advance to the state championships. The contingent was comprised of Spanish Springs' Katy Peters (20:44, sixth), Damonte's Meagan Wood (21:01, seventh), Manogue's Stephanie Dewald (21:04, eighth), Reed's Kelsea Campbell (21:19, 11th) and Damonte's Alice Chase (21:20, 12th).
In addition to Peters, Madison McHenry (21:42, 22nd), Karmyn Witt (21:57, 23rd), Ashley Delong (22:44, 39th), Chrissy Beebe (22:56, 40th), Emily Ruff (23:09, 44th) and Cara Buscay (23:32, 49th) also ran for Spanish Springs. The Cougars' girls finished fifth among the final team standings.
At Reed, the Raiders were ninth in the final girls team tally. While Campbell will be representing Reed at state, five other Raiders also completed the course Friday. Those were: Jackie Sertic (22:32, 36th), Emily Carr (23:22, 46th), Ellen Wilson (24:51, 59th), Cassandra Jacobsen (25:25, 62nd) and Rachel Yancey (25:49, 63rd).
The State Cross Country Championships will be held at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City Nov. 3.
