SPARKS -- The Sparks Police Department has reworded an electronic message sign on Vista Boulevard that originally displayed the words “speed trap.”

The sign was an attempt to encourage motorists to slow down and use caution while driving in the area between N. Los Altos Parkway and Wingfield Hills Road, an area SPD officials said is frequently traveled.

“The verbiage used, ‘speed trap,’ is not correct. We don’t use those measures,” said Sgt. Jeanmarie Walsh of the Traffic Division at SPD. When people are speeding on the city streets we write them a ticket or or give them a warning. We are trying to get people to slow down, but we don’t use speed-trap tactics. There are enough people speeding around here that we don’t need them.”

Walsh said the wording on the sign was an attempt by an officer to keep speeds from increasing on an ever-speeding stretch of road. She said the area is marked 40 mph, and 45 mph in some areas, but normally sees much higher speeds.

“Routinely, people go 60 mph through there because there are no lights or stop signs,” she said. “The wrecks we see there are pretty severe and people are always in a hurry home from work or trying to get to one place or another.”

Walsh defended her officers’ placement of the sign on Vista Boulevard, but said the wording was simply false. She said SPD has currently set out radar trailers in high-traffic and complaint areas where sometimes motorists need to be reminded of their speed before being ticketed for it.

“A lot of times people are just driving and going about their day. They don’t notice they’re going 10 or 15 over because driving is a very technical thing you’re doing, but it allows you to space out for a period of time,” Walsh said. “Those trailers help you realize how fast you’re going and if people don’t see a cop, it heightens lack of attention.”
