Reed (4-6-2) started the season slow, winning just one of its first eight matches in league play. However, the Raiders bounced back to win their next three and get back in the postseason hunt. Rookie Reed coach Joel Martinez stressed that Wednesday's defeat cannot send his team reeling in the wrong direction.
"We can't let this take away our momentum," Martinez said. "We are just one point out of fourth, which is the final playoff spot, and three points out of third.
" I thought we matched up well with Hug, but we had a couple letdowns where we didn't mark up. Their set plays hurt us. Hug is a tough team. They beat us fair and square. I can't take anything away from them."
Hug (8-4), which has won five straight, got on the scoreboard first. Alexis Gonzalez scored an unassisted goal for the Hawks in the 28th minute to break the early scoreless tie.
The 1-0 margin stayed intact into halftime and through the first 12 minutes of the second half. In the 52nd minute is when Hug tacked on its insurance goal. Eric Figueroa handled the scoring honors, thanks to a pass from Eduardo Martin.
"We communicated well. Our defense played well," Hug coach Ralph Renteria said. "Reed does a crossing pattern where they try and hit the open guy on the back door and we picked it up well. Our midfield has to run. That's something we expect. We kept up our hustle there and picked up Reed's extra guys when they tried to flood our defense.
"And our forwards did well getting traps. We just couldn't get any more shots in. Their keeper saved them a lot. I was really impressed with him."
While the Hawks were ecstatic about picking up a win over an improving Reed team, Martinez just continued to emphasize his Raiders team has plenty to play for with four matches remaining in the regular season.
"Our goal is to play every game like it's our last," Martinez said. "We can't depend on anyone else and we don't want to depend on anyone else. We want to earn a playoff a spot. We want to beat people."
Reed returns to the pitch Saturday in an 11 a.m. crossover league match at Damonte Ranch.
