Officials say as of early Saturday the fire had burned more than 2,000 acres of sagebrush and pinion-juniper. The Carter Springs fire broke out just after noon Friday south of Gardnerville, closing U.S. 395 for several hours.
The highway reopened Saturday morning but traffic was being escorted through the burn area.
No structures have been lost, and 250 firefighters are being assisted by nine air tankers, five helicopters and 20 engines.
Officials hope to have the fire contained by Monday.
