SPARKS -- The main natural gas line in a two-story building in the 1600 block of Merchant Street was sheared Thursday morning when a pickup truck hit the building.

Sparks Fire and Police departments arrived at about 6:30 a.m. and began evacuating the building and the three adjacent apartment buildings. As firefighters prepared for possible fire or explosion, NV Energy arrived to cut off the main gas line.

The City of Sparks building inspector was also on scene to determine the structural integrity of the building. It is unknown if the building will be re-occupied.

Police reported no injuries to emergency personnel, occupants of the building or the truck driver.
