Spanish Springs couldn’t have looked much better in preseason volleyball tournaments, reaching the finals of a tournament in Las Vegas only to follow that with a semifinals appearance in Galena’s tourney over the weekend.

That has coach Frank Sandomenico happy leading into the league schedule.

“I feel really good. We learned a lot about the little stuff we need to work on,” Sandomenico said. “All of our girls got to play, and we know we can be a really good team. It was nice playing all these good teams deep into the tournaments.”

The Cougars stayed alive in the 36-team tournament by sweeping Bishop Manogue, Sonora and Shasta in two games. The fourth match of the day went the distance as Spanish Springs took a 2-1 decision against Del Oro.

That set up a rematch with Manogue, one of the area’s top volleyball programs each year. While Sandomenico said his team played “pretty awesome” against the Miners early Saturday morning, Manogue got revenge by sweeping the Cougars to reach the championship match.

Spanish Springs opens up league play Tuesday at home against Douglas. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
