The Spanish Springs girls golf team passed their first league test with flying colors. The Cougars won the first High Desert League girls golf tournament of the fall season, posting a team total of 339 to edge out McQueen Tuesday at WildCreek Golf Course.

McQueen got four players to score in the 80s but could not best Spanish Springs, settling for a 343 team score. Reno was third with a 405. Reed, North Valleys and Hug did not field complete teams and thus did not compile team scores.

The league tournament was a new experience for Cougars rookie coach Mike Bosco, who actually served as the SSHS baseball coach from 2002-2010.

“This was pretty exciting,” Bosco said. “It’s not fast paced like I’m used to but it gets pretty intense coming down to the final holes. I really enjoyed watching the girls play.

“I had never really thought about it before but every sport I’ve been involved in you asked the kids to be mentally prepared for two hours or so. Here, it could be six hours and that’s hard. To stay focused for that long, it’s incredible. I’m impressed with our entire team.”

SSHS sophomore Katrina Prendergast was the star of the show Tuesday. Her round of one-under-par 71 was easily the best of the tournament. Her Cougars teammate, junior Trae Jones, turned in a score of 82. That was the second best score of the day.

“I was trying to watch our whole team,” Bosco said. “I only got to see Katrina on three or four holes. They brought the tee boxes way up and she was able to drive some par fours. She drove the ball well and she made every putt inside of 15 feet.”

Sammi Sorensen and Joanna Perry rounded out the Spanish Springs scoring contingent with a 91 and 95 respectively. For Reed, Holli Smith led the way with a 112 while Leighton Lee and Amanda Vranken turned in a 122 and 125.

“I was really happy,” Reed coach Danielle Fleiner said. “Starting at WildCreek is tough. We set small personal goals today. We wanted to finish.”

The next HDL tournament is scheduled for Sept. 6 at Somersett. The tourney will begin at 12:30 with a shotgun start.
