RENO — A 31-year-old woman from Reno is dead after an incident early Monday morning on U.S. 395 between Lemmon Valley and Stead, according to police.

At 2:35 a.m., Reno police officers and Nevada Highway Patrol troopers responded to a reported vehicle accident and subsequent shooting. Witnesses who had stopped for the accident told officers that a man had shot at them and hit a woman who was outside her vehicle. While performing CPR on the woman, the shooting suspect, identified as Jeffrey Rodriguez, 29, returned to the scene and was taken into custody without incident. The woman died at the scene.

The freeway was closed in both directions for several hours and it is expected to reopen at about 11 a.m.

After detectives interviewed witnesses at the scene, Rodriguez was arrested for murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of an ex-felon in possession of a firearm. He will be booked into the Washoe County Jail where he will be held without bail. The defendant and the victim knew each other, police reported.

Anyone who has information relating to this crime or the suspect is asked to contact the Reno Police Department at 334-2115, or Secret Witness at 322-4900, report online at www.secretwitness.com, or text the tip to 847411 (TIP 411) keyword “SW.”
