With Reno trailing 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Ryan Wheeler hit a grand slam to cut the deficit to two. The Aces pushed across two more runs in the sixth to tie the score, but Las Vegas regained the lead quickly in the seventh on a solo home run off the bat of Adeiny Hechavarria.
Reno would, though, answer in a big way. The Aces sent 12 men to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, scoring eight runs to put the game away for good.
Joe Paterson (2-1) earned the victory out of the Aces bullpen, recording the final two outs of the seventh. In all, three Aces relievers held the 51s to no runs and just one hit over the game’s final 2 2-3 innings in relief of starter Charles Brewer.
Monday’s loss fell to Las Vegas reliever Jerry Gil (4-1), who surrendered seven earned runs in one-third of an inning.
At the plate for the Aces, Wheeler led the way with three hits, three runs scored and five RBI. Josh Bell, Taylor Harbin and Konrad Schmidt all added three hits apiece in a 17-hit Reno attack.
The Aces and 51s will conclude the series on tonight at Aces Ballpark. Right-hander Barry Enright (6-5, 5.74 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while LHP Jamie Moyer (1-0, 5.40 ERA) counters for Las Vegas. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PT.
