RENO — Storymeister Films, a Reno-based production company, is seeking to fund its first short film with the help of Kickstarter, a popular crowd-funding website that helps artists gain financial backing.

The short film “The Waiter” tells the story of a fed-up server who takes matters into his own hands after dealing with ill-mannered restaurant goers.

“Kickstarter provides start-up groups like ours the opportunity to raise funds from a huge geographic area,” said David Barnes, executive producer of the film.  “It gives us a fighting chance to raise enough money to see our dream come to life.”

Kickstarter pages are similar to business proposals; they persuade backers to donate money by offering incentives and convincing them of the projects likelihood to succeed. After a proposal is submitted, each project has from 1 to 60 days to reach a fundraising goal set by the project creators.

Storymeister Films hopes to raise $5,000 to produce “The Waiter.” Production values are a top priority for the group, and the majority of funds will go towards equipment rental, insurance and a professional director of photography.

“If we reach our goal, we can produce a short film of professional quality,” said Brian O’Neill, associate producer. “We hope to send ‘The Waiter’ out to as many film festivals as possible.”

Kickstarter offers, “all-or-nothing funding” for each project submitted to the site. If a project fails to reach its fundraising goal, any money pledged is returned to the backers. July 15 is the cut off date for “The Waiter.”

“It will be a let down if we don’t reach our goal, but it just means we have to try again,” Barnes said. “I’m always optimistic.”

Storymeister Films is a new addition to the Reno film scene. Comprised primarily of University of Nevada, Reno students, the group seeks to leave a lasting impression within the independent film circuit.
