RENO — The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation has announced the winners of its Inspire scholarship.

NNCCF’s Inspire program is dedicated to teen and young adult survivors of pediatric cancer, giving them opportunities to attend camps and training that address their specific needs through the end of the cancer battle. NNCCF offered five $1,000 scholarships to applicants who are pursuing a college education at the university or community college level.

Each winner also will receive $250 in Walmart gift cards to use for school supplies.

Applicants were chosen by a volunteer committee based on written essays, all of which provided insight into their cancer journey.

One of the applicants, Nate, a 23-year-old lymphoma survivor, wrote, “I live as though cancer has never interrupted my life and have put cancer behind me. I am confident it will not return and I am not looking back. Cancer claimed one of my 23 years, but it can have no more!”

Umpqua Bank of Reno donated $2,000 to provide opportunities to two additional applicants. In all, $7,000 will be dedicated to NNCCF families or students who have been in the childhood cancer fight and are or will be enrolled in local higher education institutions.

The applicants’ essays are posted online at www.NvChildrensCancer.org for anyone to read them.
