RENO — Renown Institute for Neurosciences will host a free online seminar today to inform community members about stroke prevention. The seminar is part of Renown’s Online Health Series, which educates viewers about various health related issues.

Presented by Kathy Kelvington, RN, Stroke Coordinator at Institute for Neurosciences, the seminar will begin at noon and will last for 45 minutes. Topics of discussion will include risk factors of stroke and personal management techniques. A question and answer section will be offered after the session.

“We want to inform people about how to reduce their stroke risk, since up to 80 percent of strokes are preventable,” Kelvington said.

Although stroke is often times preventable, it is still the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Every 40 minutes, someone has a stroke, which accounts for 800,000 strokes nationally each year. Renown Health takes a proactive approach to prevent stroke by educating patients and community members regarding ways they can reduce their personal risk.

The online series is open to anyone with a phone and a computer with internet access. Recordings of each seminar will also be available online after each presentation. Interested individuals can register for the seminar or find more information by visiting
