RENO — Run Amuck is back and bigger than ever, beginning Saturday at the Reno River Festival.

Registration is now open for the fifth annual race in Reno, which features for the first time ever the world’s largest inflatable water slide. Boasting a drop from a three-story-high platform, the 175-foot-long slide is one of many new obstacles that are included in this year’s race. Other fun obstacles are set to be announced as the race approaches, which also features other changes for 2012 such as unlimited team members and staggered release times.

The fifth annual Run Amuck takes place on a flat, 2.5-mile course that runs from Wingfield Park to Idlewild Park and back, in downtown Reno. As always, the race’s 60-foot-long mud pit is located in Wingfield Park while up to 10 other obstacles are located throughout the course. Costumes are encouraged and top teams are rewarded during the costume contest, which takes place immediately before the start of the race at 12:30 p.m.

Differing from the last four years, the 2012 Run Amuck is no longer a relay, allowing teams to grow as large as participants wish. Also, to help avoid obstacle congestion, the race starts in waves, with 200 runners beginning every 20 minutes from 2 p.m. until 3:20 p.m. To ensure all team members begin in the same wave, runners are encouraged to register at the same time.

Registration for the fifth annual Run Amuck race at the Reno River Festival costs $35 per person and includes entry into the race, a commemorative T-shirt, group photo and other swag.

To allow for set-up, tear down and production of the event, the following streets will be closed to vehicle traffic:

• 9 a.m. Thursday through 9 p.m. Sunday: Arlington Avenue from First to Court streets and eastbound First Street from Ralston Street to Arlington Avenue.

• 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday: First Street from Arlington Avenue to Ralston Street

• Noon to 5 p.m. Saturday: Riverside Drive from First to Booth streets; Booth Street from Riverside Drive to Idlewild Drive (bridge only); westbound lane of Idlewild Drive from Booth Street Bridge to the pedestrian walkway (approximately 100 feet); and Latimore and Mastroianni drives to Cowan Drive (inside Idlewild Park only).

Alternate routes to reach the north and south sides of Wingfield Park include Sierra Street and Keystone Avenue via California Avenue and Second Street.
