RENO — Reno Mayor Bob Cashell and Sparks Mayor Geno Martini were all smiles while kindly taunting each other before their wooden cars blazed the track during the inaugural Corporate Pinewood Derby.
The event, held at Reno Toyota, was a fundraising benefit for the Nevada area Boy Scouts of America, and gave the two leaders a chance to lend their support. Some 20 cars participated in the event.
“The Boy Scouts are a great organization and hopefully we can help raise awareness and have a few laughs,” Martini said.
He has been a longtime supporter of the Boy Scouts through donation dinners and other events and believes the Boy Scouts “build good young men with good ideals, honesty, integrity, and all the things boys need.”
Though he was never a Boy Scout, Cashell said he has seen the positive influence it brings to young men and will continue to support them for years to come.
“Geno and I both will do anything we can to help whenever something needs to be done,” Cashell said.
Both mayors were quick to discount each other’s car, saying that losing was not a possibility. Martini had some help from his stepson who cut and shaped his car in a shop, adorning the clean pine with a City of Sparks decal on both sides. Cashell said the origin of his car’s body is “top secret” as he pointed out Martini’s “game face” from across the room.
As the crowd gathered around the sloped track that began near a front entrance to the dealership, the first competitors stepped to the starting line with a prompt “Bring it on Bubba” from Cashell.
The anticipation was broken as his black car zoomed down the track with the City of Reno emblem crossing the line first.
With a smile on his face, Martini shook hands with Cashell and said, “I think it was rigged,” as they sat back to watch the other competitors in the tournament. Local businesses and groups including AT&T, State Farm, Western Nevada Supply Company and many others competed in the double elimination tournament, with a chance to be the first name etched into the distinguished first-place trophy.
