SPARKS — The passenger involved in Wednesday’s pursuit of a carjacked vehicle, reportedly driven by suspected residential burglar Jeremy Carlsson, 31, has been arrested, Sparks police reported Thursday.
Michael Mulkey, 54, was arrested Wednesday at 1475 Vista Del Rancho Parkway in Sparks by the Sparks Crime Suppression Unit and charged with felony eluding. Mikey was charged additionally as an ex-felon in possession of a firearm and his bail was set as $20,000.
Mulkey was the passenger in a vehicle pursuit in which it was reported that Carlsson was driving a stolen vehicle.
The vehicle was located in the area where the suspect had abandoned the vehicle after the pursuit. Several guns that were thought to be stolen were located a short distance from the vehicle.
A first vehicle crashed prior to a second vehicle being car jacked. It is believed that Mulkey was a passenger in both cars, according to Detective Kevin Dash.
“The vehicle has not been returned to the owner,” Dash said. “No one in the vehicle was injured.”
Detectives continue to work the case regarding several residential burglaries that may be connected to break-ins in Reno, Dash said.
“We’ve been working most the night,” Dash said. “Three guns were recovered yesterday. The investigation is still outstanding. Jeremy, we believe, is still the prime suspect. The evidence in the vehicle shows that Jeremy Carlsson is associated.”
Detectives are still working to determine as to whether Carlsson is involved in the residential burglaries, Dash said.
“We are investigating whether he was involved. We do believe he is the prime suspect in the possession of a stolen vehicle.”
Detectives are investigating two residential burglaries in particular that may be connected to Carlsson, he said.
The investigation is a joint effort with the Reno Police department.
According to Dash, the number of residential burglaries in Sparks has not jumped significantly in the past few months. The area has seen a spat of commercial burglaries, however.
The department has had a few leads from the public through Secret Witness, which detectives are following, he said.
“We are encouraging people to please give us a call because any information would be greatly appreciated,” Dash said.
Dash said the police believe Carlsson is still in the Reno-Sparks region.
The case is still being investigated and additional charges may be pending.
Sparks detectives are still attempting to locate Carlsson. He is believed to be armed and dangerous and a threat to the community, according to Sparks detectives.
Detectives from the Sparks Police Department, the Crime Suppression Unit and the Reno Police Department attempted to stop a car, occupied by at least three people and believed to be involved in a number of residential burglaries throughout the Reno-Sparks region Wednesday. Carlsson was reportedly driving the vehicle.
After noticing the vehicle, detectives attempted to stop the car in the area of Howard Drive and Nichols Blvd. But, instead of yielding, the vehicle, a maroon 2003 Buick Century, fled from police.
The driver sped off at a high rate of speed, endangering the lives of several other drivers with his manner of driving, the police reported. The pursuit was stopped in the interested of public safety.
Detectives located the vehicle at 1475 Vista Del Rancho unoccupied. Detectives located several firearms that had been taken from the suspect vehicle and hidden in the apartment complex near the vehicle. SPD Detectives, Regional Gang Unit Officers, RPD Crime Suppression Team officers, RAVEN, RPD SPD WCSO K-9 units conducted a lengthy area search in an attempt to locate Carlsson.
Detectives had enough information that the main suspect, Carlsson, was armed with at least one gun, they reported. They also learned that Carlsson might be involved in an earlier car jacking and robbery of a student in the paring lot of Truckee Meadows Community College earlier that morning.
Carlsson is wanted for multiple felony charges, including car jacking, robbery, possession of a stolen property and felony eluding police.
Carlsson is believed to be armed and should be considered dangerous, according to police. He is known to hang out at local casinos throughout the Reno-Sparks area. Citizens should not approach Carlsson, police reported.
