RENO — The local affiliate of Planned Parenthood will present scholarships to three teen moms who have overcome the odds by completing high school and broken the cycle of repeated pregnancies.
On May 30, Keleka Kam, Erika Martinez and Lisa Cooper will be presented with Morgan Scholarships for their completion of the Teen Success Program, which aims to break the cycle of repeated pregnancy and interrupted education that often traps teen mothers and their children in poverty. Since 2000, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte has offered the Teen Success program for mothers ages 13 to 19. There are two groups currently operating in the Reno/Sparks region to help young mothers stay in or return to school; maintain current family size until age 19 or completion of high school; develop self-confidence and responsible behavior; foster decision-making skills; discuss and develop healthy relationships; and share the joys and challenges of parenting. The Morgan Scholarship was established to provide graduates of the program an opportunity to attend college.
The presentation will take place from noon to 2 p.m. at the First United Method Church of Reno, 203 W. First St.
