MINDEN — Spurred by a challenge from company leadership, GE Measurement & Control employees in Minden have raised more than $8,000 for the Backpack Buddies program, an organization that provides weekend food for children in need.

Typically, the GE Volunteers, an internal organization that provides opportunities to get employees involved in the community, supports Backpack Buddies for two four-week periods throughout the year by conducting an internal food drive, using GE volunteers to pack the food bags and deliver them to two local elementary schools.

In an effort to step up the involvement, Bently Nevada General Manager Art Eunson, Supply Chain Leader Ernest Carey and Chief Information Officer Jeff Davey proposed a challenge to the employees: raise $3,000 to keep the commitment going for more kids and more time. If the employees were able to hit this goal, Eunson, Carey and Davey would donate an additional $500 each. It took only two weeks for the 700 employees to meet the goal.

“This team gives back a tremendous amount to our local community,” Eunson said. “This particular effort was something that hit close to home for many of us. We knew we could make a bigger difference for this service that our community desperately needs.”

“GE Energy and their dedicated employees have been instrumental in our efforts to provide weekend food to over 300 in-need children in 10 Douglas County schools,” said Lin Larson, chair of the Douglas County Backpack Buddies. “Their commitment to our community and to some of the most needing is outstanding and commendable.”

The GE Foundation provides 100 percent matching funds to qualifying non-profit organizations for donations made from employees. After matching funds, the grand total was just over $8,000.
