Players who take part in the camp will work under McNeely, who has coached in Texas at the 5A level for 18 years where he has won nine District titles and appeared in the regional tournament three times. He has also helped produce three High School All-Americans and has sent over 30 players to play basketball at Division I, II, and III levels.
McNeely spent seven years as an assistant coach at Southern Methodist University and the University of Houston while also serving as the gym director for the Derek Fisher Basketball Academy for the past three years. Over McNeely’s career he has worked with many great college and NBA players.
“We’re real lucky to have that opportunity,” Spanish Springs coach Kyle Penney said. “He has a ton of experience when you look at his bio. It teaches a lot for the kids who are able to attend. It gives them exposure to different things that they do in Texas, where basketball is a whole lot more prestigious than it is here in Nevada, so to speak. It’s a great opportunity for the kids who do want to be a part of it.”
The High Intensity Hoop Clinic will focus on developing individual skill sets, with workouts centered around offensive and defensive footwork, one-on-one drills, the transition game, creating your own shot and having a positive attitude.
“They’ll have some drills that they will do that they can take home,” Penney said. “It’s going to be high intensity based. It’s not a ‘baby-sit’ type of camp. It’s going to be a camp where you’re expected to sweat and work hard and listen and make mistakes because that’s how you get better.
“It’s all about hard work and man-hours. The more hours you put in, the more success you’re going to have. I’m a big believer that it’s about people who will put in more time than other people. Those are the ones that give themselves a better shot to be successful.”
The High Intensity camp at Spanish Springs High will be open to grades 7-12. There will be three sessions with the first on Friday, June 1 from 7-9 p.m. and the final two on Saturday, June 2 from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. The cost per camper is $115 with limited spots available. Registration and payment can be sent to:

“We put the camp on because we want our kids to have that opportunity to partake in it,” Penney said. “We’re around our kids enough where they hear enough of the stuff from us, so it’s good for kids in our own program to hear pretty much the same things that we say from people outside of where we’re at.
“It gives our kids and our program hopefully an opportunity to get into it and compete against other kids at a different level where it’s not so much team oriented. You get to do different things and showcase different talents that individuals may have versus what the coaches want from them.”
