MCCARRAN — The Food Bank of Northern Nevada gained more than warehouse space when it moved to the Donald W. Reynolds Food Distribution Center about three-and-a-half years ago. The organization also gained an increase of refrigeration and freezer space that was 20 times larger than the previous Sparks location.
This increase in refrigeration capacity has contributed to a major change in what can be distributed to the hungry in the region. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada distributed 3.8 million pounds of fresh produce during the fiscal year 2010-2011, which was more than 38 percent of the total distribution.
This year, the food bank is asking groups or individuals who plant gardens to consider the hungry when making their plans. Supporters are asked to “plant a row” for the hungry or simply to donate their excess produce. The food bank has reached out to its partner agencies to set times and locations for produce drop-off. The agencies will then distribute the food directly to those who need it. The list of agencies will be updated throughout the season and posted online at www.fbnn.org.
