RENO — A sex offender with multiple convictions was arrested Friday for allegedly sexually assaulting an elderly woman.

Richard Sharks, 64, was taken into custody at about 3:40 a.m. by Reno police who saw him coming out of a house in the 700 block of Belli Drive. Officers had received a call about a suspicious person knocking on doors telling the occupants he had their wallet. Upon arriving at the scene, Officer Kevin Collins reported seeing Sharks exiting one of the residences, pulling his pants up. As Collins was talking to Sharks, RPD received a report of a sexual assault at that same house.

The elderly female victim reported she heard a knock on the door and a man saying he had her wallet. She partially opened her door, which had a security chain, and the suspect forced his way in and assaulted her. She was taken to a hospital and was treated for her injuries, which were not life-threatening.

According to police, Sharks is a Tier 3 sex offender with convictions for battery with the intent to commit sexual assault in 1998 and open and gross lewdness in 1998 and 2001. He has four prior convictions for sex offender failing to register, change address or provide false information. He was released from jail in November after completing a sentence for sex offender failure to complete annual verification.

Anyone with information about this crime or the suspect should contact the Reno Police Department at 334-2115, Secret Witness at 322-4900, report online at www.secretwitness.com or text the tip to 847411 (TIP 411) keyword “SW.”
