RENO — The Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) of Nevada will hold an open house at 6 p.m. April 17 to officially mark the grand opening of its new facility in Reno. The celebration coincides with World Hemophilia Day, which promotes greater awareness of inherited bleeding disorders.

The Hemophilia Treatment Center of Nevada, a program of the Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, is the only federally recognized HTC in Nevada for those with inherited bleeding disorders such as hemophilia and Von Willebrand disease. It is part of a network of more than 140 HTCs across the country.

The specialized care provided by the HTC has preventative, diagnostic and rehabilitative components. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shown medical care provided at hemophilia treatment centers reduces the risk of death by 60 percent and hospitalization by 50 percent.

“The new facility in Reno helps us complete our mission by allowing us to serve a greater number of Nevadans who are dealing with inherited bleeding disorders,” said Dr. Jonathan Bernstein, founder and medical director of the Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, which provides funding to the Hemophilia Treatment Center. “The new HTC brings a level of care to those with bleeding disorders that has not been available in this community on a permanent basis,” Bernstein said.

For several years medical teams from the Hemophilia Treatment Center traveled around the state to provide specialized care to people with inherited bleeding disorders who don’t have access to specialized care in their own communities. Those annual visits to the communities of Winnemucca, Ely, Elko and the Owyhee Duck Valley Indian Community will continue in the future.
