CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Museum and Reno Coin Club are partnering to celebrate National Coin Week with a special event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 20 and 21 in Carson City.

The Historic Coin Press No. 1, once a part of the U.S. Mint and now a central piece of the museum, will mint medallions having the famous “CC” mintmark. The coins are available for purchase at the museum’s coin press or in the store at 600 N. Carson St.

Reno Coin Club will hold an exchange of State and national parks quarters and presidential dollars. The club’s exhibit will include an educational display on coin collecting, and ancient and obsolete U.S. coins. Free foreign coins will be given to children. Guests are invited to tour the exhibits on the history of the Carson City U.S. Mint: the Historic Coin Press No. 1; the “CC” Coin Collections; How Coins Are Made; and watch the video in the Marshall Mint Theatre on the history of the famous “CC” mint.

National Coin Week is sponsored by the American Numismatic Association, the nation’s largest non-profit educational organization dedicated to helping and encouraging people to study and collect money and related items.

“Money has gone through some amazing changes in its history,” said Andy Dickes, ANA National Coin Week coordinator. “Where we exchanged shells for goods and services thousands of years ago, today we swipe a plastic card. From the first coins and paper money to the steam coin press and polymer notes, the transformation of money is a fascinating journey.”

The Nevada State Museum and the Reno Coin Club are members of the American Numismatic Association. The 89th Annual National Coin Week is April 15 through 21.
