Aces starter Joe Martinez cruised through seven scoreless frames before running into trouble in the eighth. The right-hander allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the inning before Reno turned to Sam Demel out of the bullpen. Demel came on and surrendered a two-run double and a three-run home run that gave the Sky Sox their first lead of the night, 5-2, which would stand up.
Demel (0-1) took the loss on Saturday, while Edgmer Escalona (1-0) earned the victory for Colorado Springs. Escalona worked a scoreless seventh before Zach Putnam closed out the game with a spotless eighth and ninth to earn the save.
At the plate for Reno, a two-run double in the fifth by Cody Ransom accounted for all of the Aces’ offense on the night. A.J. Pollock continued his torrid start to the season, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored. He has now hit safely in nine of his first 13-career Triple-A at-bats.
The series comes to a close on Sunday with the first matinee of the season at Aces Ballpark. LHP Zach Kroenke (0-0, No ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while the Sky Sox will counter with RHP Rob Scahill (0-0, No ERA). First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
The day will be highlighted by the first Renown Children’s Hospital Family Funday of the season, featuring Baseball Bingo.
