RENO — As part of National Public Health Week, April 2-8, the Washoe County Health District reminds residents that taking measures will lower the risk of disease and deaths.

“Discussing sexual health with your partner, your family and your health care provider may be difficult and uncomfortable for many people,” said Washoe County District Health Officer Dr. Joseph Iser.

Iser and other public health professionals point particularly to the importance of parents talking with their children regarding their knowledge, values and attitudes related to sexual activity, sexuality and healthy relationships.

Approximately 19 million new cases of STD infections in the United States each year — almost half occur in young people ages 15 to 24.  More than 1 million people in the U.S. are estimated to be living with HIV infection, and more than 50,000 people become infected each year.
