RENO (AP) — A 24-year-old Iraq War veteran has been arrested on suspicion of murder for the shooting of a friend he was picking up from a night of drinking in Reno.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Bruce Hahn tells the Reno Gazette-Journal that Matthew Mahaffey will likely be arraigned Tuesday.
Mahaffey is accused in the death of 24-year-old Michael Boyle, who was shot in the chest July 3 as he opened the back door to Mahaffey’s truck. Mahaffey told police he thought someone was breaking into his car to rob or kill him.
Court documents say Mahaffey had arranged to pick up Boyle and another friend in downtown Reno so they could buy cocaine and hang out.
The shooting happened shortly afterward in a parking lot across from the Freight House District.
