RENO — On Sunday at 6:30 p.m., Reno police Officer Ben Wright was hailed by a citizen about a man who had just driven up to the Jackson’s Market at 9530 S. McCarran Blvd. and appeared to be grossly intoxicated as he could barely stand up unassisted.

Officer Wright stopped the man, later identified as 21-year-old Sachin Mehta, as he was about to enter the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Officer Wright noticed Mehta had an item concealed in the waist of his pants and asked if he had any weapons on him. Mehta immediately reached for the item in his waistband and Officer Wright trapped Mehta’s hand and felt a firearm. Mehta refused to let go of the weapon as he continued to try to remove it from his waistband.

Officer Wright wrestled Mehta to the ground and was able to place him into handcuffs without any injuries to either of them. Mehta was found to be under the influence of a number of prescription drugs. He was booked at Washoe County jail for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, possession of a firearm while under the influence, obstructing and resisting, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
