RENO — A Celebration of Life 5K Fun Walk/Run will start at Bartley Ranch Regional Park at Lakeside Drive and Barley Ranch Road in Reno at 2 p.m. Sunday to celebrate the life of Maison T. Ortiz, 15, who died in a snowboarding accident January 2011.

The fundraising effort was launched two months after Maison’s death to raise money for a memorial section of the library at Elizabeth Lenz Elementary School, where Maison attended.

The event will raise money to finish that memorial project and restore sections of Bartley Ranch Park, which was devastated by the Caughlin Ranch Fire last year.

Maison attended Lenz Elementary School, Pine Middle School and Galena High School After his death, one of his former elementary school teachers, Cheryl Raybourn, started the fundraising effort to buy books in Maison’s memory.

Participants of the event may register from 1 to 2 p.m. on the day of the race. More than 850 people participated in last year’s event. For more information about how to participate, go to www.Irunfor Maison.com. Registration fees are $10 per person or $30 per family.
