MINERAL COUNTY — An elderly Mineral County man driving south on U.S. 95 at 11:05 p.m. Thursday was killed as a result of a near head-on collision about one mile north of community of Luning.
Nevada Highway Patrol investigation details indicate that the elderly man, who was driving a red 1976 Chevrolet Nova sedan was struck by Mario H. Collazo, 41, of La Puente, Calif., who was operating a white 1999 Freightliner tractor towing an enclosed semi-trailer.
In an effort to avoid a direct, head-on collision, the driver of the big-rig streered his truck to the right. The front of the sedan struck the rear axels of the trailer before the Nova rotated off the east edge of the pavement and caught fire. The Mineral County man was pronounced dead at the scene while the truck driver was not injured.
As a result of the crash, both directions of U.S. 95 were closed for several hours while NHP troopers completed an on-scene investigation of the crash. NHP’s Major Accident Investigation Team is handling the case.
