In Minden, the Reed softball team opened Northern 4A play in impressive fashion, comfortably beating host Douglas 6-1 in a cross-over league game Thursday afternoon.

The Blue and Gold wasted no time pouncing on the Tigers. Back-to-back singles in the second inning from Megan Dettling and Lindsay Yearman got the bats going for the Raiders, and another pair of singles from Hannah Martini and Cori Gammon put the first two runs of the game on the board for Reed. With two on and two out, Mary Dettling smacked a double to clear the bases, pushing the Raiders’ advantage to 4-0.

Still holding a 4-0 edge in the fifth inning, Yearman drilled a ball deep for a home run, increasing the lead to 5-0. The Raiders added one more insurance run in the top of the sixth after Martini doubled and Gammon singled into left field to bring her home.

Douglas managed to push its only run of the game across the plate in the seventh inning.

While the Raiders’ bats were hot, Reed hurler Jacquelyn Sertic put on a pitching display as she took the circle for the Blue and Gold. Pitching a complete game, Sertic gave up eight hits while striking out seven Tigers, earning the win.

“We had an all-around good game,” Reed coach Jon Wunder said. “I was very pleased with our offense and our hitting. We pounded out 14 hits. On top of that, our defense played solid. We had no errors behind a solid pitching performance. It was a pretty well-rounded game.”

Reed (4-2, 1-0 in Northern 4A) will take the diamond again when it host Reno High on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.
